We specialise in Power Plant Resilience Engineering for exceptional operating scenarios
Our expertise covers critical functions which secure energy supply when the grid is under stress. With capabilities such as blackstart, blackout recovery, island-mode operation and grid stability support. We provide R&D-driven solutions that enhance national grid resilience – starting at the power plant level.
We focus on the moments when systems are pushed to their limits. Our knowledge relies on the experience of rebuilding blackstart capability from scratch for a Fingrid reserve plant. We have modernised nuclear emergency diesel automation at Loviisa NPP and created test methods for Safety Class I & II systems at Olkiluoto. In the marine sector, we have designed hybrid PMS/EMS systems for isolated islanded environments with several different energy sources. These systems must be able to cope with blackouts and restarts – both are treated as a built-in part of the design philosophy rather than an exception.
Our strength lies in combining research with practical execution and knowledge of real-life challenges. We know from experience what happens on site and support our clients all the way from early design to commissioning. Documentation and planning are tools for predicting problems – but it’s our practical know-how, our ability to coordinate international teams and make decisions under pressure, that makes the difference. These ensure that our projects succeed in the field.
The rapid growth of renewables reduces rotating inertia, decreases the grid’s ability to control reactive power and creates protection challenges. Our expertise in resilience engineering enables us to anticipate these effects and design solutions that maintain stability of power plants and networks under exceptional conditions.
